Beowulf는 `게르만 민족에 의해 만들어진, 현존하는 가장 위대한 서사시 the greatest of the surviving epics composed by German peoples`라 후대에 일컬어질 만큼, 고대시 중에서 가장 탁월한 것이다 하지만 그 무대와 민물은 영국적인 것이라기보다는 그들의 선조인 게르만족의 전설에 기반을 두고 있따 이 시는 당시의 사회 구조와 가치관에 대해 많은 것을 알려주고 있는 歷史(역사)의 보고(寶庫)이기도 하다.
